In a cross-sectional survey of 364 women planning or having undergone minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, adding bolt-ons (particularly self-confidence and tiredness) to EQ-5D-5L reduced ceiling effects and improved construct validity and explanatory power. These bolt-ons enhanced discrimination across known groups and are recommended for clinical studies and health economic evaluations of MICPs.

OBJECTIVES: There is growing interest in measuring health outcomes associated with minimally invasive cosmetic procedures (MICPs), such as botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid injections. However, the EQ-5D may have limited content validity for this purpose. This study aims to psychometrically test five additional dimensions ('bolt-ons') for the EQ-5D-5L in individuals planning or undergoing MICPs. METHODS: In 2023, a cross-sectional, online survey was conducted with 149 women planning MICPs and 215 who had recently undergone them. Respondents completed the EQ-5D-5L, five bolt-ons (skin irritation, self-confidence, sleep, social relationships, tiredness), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale-Straightforward Items (BFNE-S). The following psychometric properties were tested for the EQ-5D-5L + bolt-on(s): ceiling, convergent and divergent validity, explanatory power and known-groups validity. RESULTS: Adding tiredness (22%), self-confidence (23%) or sleep bolt-ons (27%) substantially reduced the ceiling of the EQ-5D-5L (47%). The self-confidence and social relationships bolt-ons showed a moderate or strong correlation with the RSES and BFNE-S total scores (-0.462 to -0.679). The tiredness and self-confidence bolt-ons improved the EQ-5D-5L's explained variance in EQ VAS scores from 37% to 45%. The self-confidence and social relationships bolt-ons improved the EQ-5D-5L's discrimination between known groups based on self-esteem and bodily appearance (relative efficiency: 2.72 to 2.82). CONCLUSIONS: Relevant bolt-ons substantially enhance the psychometric performance of the EQ-5D-5L in MICP populations. The self-confidence and tiredness bolt-ons may be recommended as primary choices for use alongside the EQ-5D-5L, both in clinical studies and as part of sensitivity analyses in economic evaluations of MICPs.

2. Limited Applicability of Neoclassical Facial Canons in Tibetan Youth: 2D Photogrammetry Evaluation.

Neoclassical facial proportion canons have long served as benchmarks for defining facial beauty across diverse populations. However, their applicability varies significantly among ethnic groups. This study critically evaluates the validity of these canons among young Tibetan adults in China, with a particular focus on vertical and horizontal facial proportions. A total of 455 young Tibetan students (136 men and 319 women) between the ages of 18 and 25 years enrolled at Tibet University participated in the study. Standardized frontal and lateral facial photographs were obtained for analysis. Most neoclassical facial canons demonstrated limited applicability to the Tibetan population, as none fully adhered to the 3-section facial canon. The lower facial 3-section canon was identified in 1.5% of men and 1.3% of women. The naso-orbital canon was observed in 11.8% of men and 34.9% of women, the naso-oral canon in 0% of men and 2.2% of women, and the naso-facial canon in 0.7% of men and 3.8% of women. Significant sex differences were identified ( P  < 0.05). Overall, the upper facial third exceeded the middle and lower thirds, while the intercanthal distance surpassed the eye fissure length in the majority of subjects. Neoclassical facial canons are largely inapplicable to the Tibetan population, particularly in the context of cosmetic or surgical planning. Despite demonstrating slightly higher applicability in women, the overall validity of these canons remains low. The distinct facial features of the Tibetan population necessitate the development of population-specific aesthetic standards, providing valuable insights into their unique facial morphology.

3. Estimation of optimal culture conditions for Gedaniella panicellus GPYS21 (Fragilariaceae) as a high-yield bioresource for palmitoleic acid and fucoxanthin production.

Using response surface methodology, the marine diatom Gedaniella panicellus was optimized for growth and shown to produce exceptionally high palmitoleic acid (62.37% of fatty acids) and substantial fucoxanthin (9.21 mg/g). These properties position the strain as a promising bioresource for cosmeceutical and nutraceutical ingredient production.

Gedaniella panicellus, a marine diatom belonging to the family Fragilariaceae, has not yet been explored for its biotechnological potential. This study aimed to optimize the growth of G. panicellus using response surface methodology and assess its cellular biochemical composition to verify the production of value-added compounds. The strain was identified through morphological and phylogenetic analyses, with optimal conditions of 20.50 °C, pH 7.33, and 42.32 PSU salinity. Its biochemical profile revealed 24.38 % proteins, 33.05 % carbohydrates, and 37.28 % lipids. Fatty acid analysis showed that the G. panicellus produces a high level of palmitoleic acid (62.37 %), exceeding the yields from macadamia nut and other microalgae. Pigment analysis indicated significant fucoxanthin production (9.21 mg/g), along with diadinoxanthin (2.21 mg/g), and β-carotene (0.49 mg/g) contents. Additionally, the strain synthesises various essential and nonessential amino acids. These findings highlight G. panicellus-first recorded in South Korea-as a promising bioresource for palmitoleic acid and carotenoid production, with potential applications in cosmetics and nutraceuticals.
